A Fight of Cherries

Guenther Anders

Günther Anders and Hannah Arendt, his first wife, married in 1929 and divorced in 1937. After her death in December 1975 Anders went back to the notes he had made of their philosophical discussions in the first years of their marriage. Recalling that happy time in Berlin and feeling that Arendt had been the great love of his life, he began to reconstruct their exchanges from this period.

These “Hannah dialogues,” which existed only in manuscript form, have now been edited for the first time by Gerhard Oberschlick. Christian Dries provides an accompanying essay on the biographies and intellectual development of both Arendt and Anders that sheds light on the participants and helps readers locate the dialogues in the context of the two protagonists’ work.
