Joan of Arc

Gerd Krumeich

Joan of Arc is one of the most exciting personalities of the Middle Ages. A young girl of peasant origin has visions and suddenly finds herself at the head of an army, defeating Englishmen and Burgundians she also leads the Dauphin to the royal anointing in Reims. But shortly afterwards she is captured and after a show trial Joan of Arc is burned at the age of 19. Krumeich’s decades of research on the Virgin of Orleans culminate in this masterful biography.

He shows how a pre-modern personality asserts herself against powerful institutions such as the church and insists on an individual relationship to God. The book impressively traces the different stages of her extraordinary life. Krumeich refutes convincingly the suspicion that Joan of Arc would have been in reality a man.
