Black Artists Now!

Ann Mbuti

The book presents fifteen strikingly innovative black artists from all over the globe, a group of creatives now breathing new life into the predominantly white, male world of art. In shining its light on their work, this publication helps to fill a major gap in art history.

The eponymous artists work with a range of media and demonstrate their versatility in the pursuit of new approaches. Meet Kara Walker, whose work in silhouette causes a stir wherever in the world it is shown, Arthur Jafa, video artist, cinematographer, also known for his collaboration with Beyoncé and Kanye West, and others in the group with the same impressive range of interests and talents, from the large-scale installations composed of multi-coloured bottle-tops created by El Anatsui to Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and her fictitious, enigmatic portraiture, and onward to Tabita Rezaire’s cybernetic media art – each and every one of them shakes up the conventional view of art.

Ann Mbuti tells inspiring stories of contemporary black artists, the youngest born in 1993, the oldest in 1944, all people who broaden our perspectives and, with their individualistic approaches, constructively question the canon of art history.

This is a richly illustrated book for all ages with reproductions of the original works and illustrations by Summuya Khader.
