The Women’s Movement and Feminism

Ute Gerhard

Beginning with the uprisings in 1789, this book covers the history of the women’s movement up to the present day. Ute Gerhard describes the formation of an organized social movement around the 1848 Revolution and the height of its coordination and public impact around 1900, then the struggle for equal rights after the First World War and the rise of second-wave feminism after 1970. Finally, she explores the current state of women’s rights and feminism as well as the change in gender relations at the beginning of the 21st century.
