180 Degrees: Stories Against Hate

Bastian Berbner

Deep fractures run through Germany, Europe and the world at large. Trench warfare between left and right, rich and poor, between the sexes or young and old – society’s polarization advances inexorably. And we watch, uncertain, intimidated and clueless. Is a 180 degree turn still possible?

In conversation with experts Bastian Berbner learns that hatred and prejudice can be overcome – at least in theory. He goes on a search for people who have accomplished just this – and finds many more than expected. The book looks to the places we fail to notice.  It tells the stories of encounters from an Irish village, a Danish police station, a school in Botswana, a terraced housing estate in Hamburg. We meet Nazis and Islamists and those who fight against them, and along the way we are immersed into a social psychology experiment that offers another view onto the world and suggests a way to combat one of the great crises of our time.
