The Huguenots

Alexander Schunka

The Huguenots, a French Protestant group, were oppressed and persecuted in sixteenth and seventeenth century France – a development that culminated dramatically in the St Bartholomew Massacre of 1572.

As a consequence of the ensuing flight, the Huguenots become the most significant migrant group of early modernity. Alexander Schunka pictures the violence and persecution, but also the economic and political successes of the Huguenots in his compact overview. At a time of global refugee crises, this is a book that contributes to our better understanding of our own time.
